NEW BEDFORD — A city police officer was arrested last week and charged with improper storage of his firearm, a felony, and misdemeanor assault following a domestic incident involving another officer in the department.
Robinson Ubri, who joined the department in 2018, has been placed on administrative leave, Police Chief Paul Oliveira confirmed last week. The department has opened an internal investigation into the case and would not comment, as it is an “ongoing personnel matter.”
John Seed, Ubri’s attorney, declined comment for himself and Ubri. He said they will “allow the criminal justice process time to play out.” Ubri was arraigned in New Bedford District Court on May 2, and pleaded not guilty.
According to a police report, Ubri texted the other officer, with whom he has been in an “on-off” relationship, before arriving at her apartment. Upon his arrival, the female officer allegedly ended the relationship and tried to keep Ubri from entering her apartment.
Ubri, the responding officer’s narrative recounts, then became “physical” and “pushe[d]” the other officer “with two hands in the chest area” to get into the apartment, where there was an “unidentified male.” Ubri then left, according to the police report.
The male who was in the apartment is listed as “unknown.” The department has not responded to a question about who the other individual was.
After the department responded to the initial call, a police captain went to Ubri’s home and seized a handgun capable of holding more than 10 rounds, which was unsecured and without a trigger lock, per the police report.
Seed and a department spokesperson did not confirm whether it was his department-issued firearm.
Under state law, it is illegal to store a large capacity firearm “in any place unless such weapon is secured in a locked container or equipped with a tamper-resistant mechanical lock or other safety device, properly engaged so as to render such weapon inoperable.”
A violation of that law is a felony that can be punished by a fine of at least $2,000 or imprisonment of at least 1½ years.
Misdemeanor charges of breaking and entering and assault against Ubri also carry potential fines or imprisonment.
Ubri is set to appear in court next month.
