Logan is the youngest, most diverse and fastest growing city in Queensland… and I believe the most talented too.
Council has partnered with the National Football League of America for an amazing sporting opportunity for our kids.
Students from twelve schools from South-East Queensland, with six of those in Logan, will compete in an NFL Flag schools tournament at Logan Metro Sports Field on Friday, 21 June.
The NFL will then fly the winning team to the US to compete against other international teams in July.
If you haven’t heard about Flag Football before, it’s a no-contact version of gridiron, played on a small scale field with no goal posts.
Players wear belts with flags that can be snatched by opposing teams, rather than making tackles or blocking.
Last week I joined 40 students from Flagstone State Community College, Mabel Park SHS, Marsden SHS and Springwood SHS to get some Flag Football pointers from one NFL star.
Former wide receiver Kenny Stills, who played for Miami Dolphins, Houston
Texans and New Orleans Saints, took time out of his Australian holiday to give his time to Logan kids, joining in a training session at Marsden State High School.
He was so generous with his time, and clearly very impressed with how many talented athletes there are in our city.
Of course, I needed to get some pointers from him on how to throw a spiral too!
As a sport, NFL Flag is growing pretty quickly in Queensland and there are huge opportunities overseas.
You never know, this tournament could be someone’s first step towards a Logan student’s superbowl dream.
Trinity College Beenleigh and Woodridge SHS are the other two schools who will represent our city at the tournament in June.
Later this year, other Logan students aged 9-14 will get the chance to try the sport too.
On behalf of everyone in Logan, I’d like to wish all girls and boys competing in this upcoming competition good luck.
We are very excited and proud of you.
